House on a Rock |
![]() House on a Rock Unique Custom Home Architecture and Landscaping Design : 1-Before Before any construction started on this site, I had to come to terms with the dominant feature ... the rock. Rather than blasting it away, I built the design around it and benefited from the panoramic views available at the high elevation. top ![]() House on a Rock Unique Custom Home Architecture and Landscaping Design : 2-Floor Plans The shape of the house is a resault of the triangular shape of the lot. The main floor provides all the living and recreation spaces of the house surrounding the indoor pool. A double-sided gas fireplace creates a cozy environment in the great room and pool. The guest room has a cheater door to the luxurious main bathroom. The bedroom deck features views across the back yard to the mountains beyond. The upper floor features the master suite with plenty of closet space, a luxury ensuite and the observatory that has amazing views of the ocean, mountian range and downtown Victoria. top ![]() House on a Rock Unique Custom Home Architecture and Landscaping Design : 3-Elevation Drawings The asymmetrical balance seen in the elevations was achieved by creating a logical flow throughout the interior of the house. The outcome is a naturally graduated exterior form that is impressive and striking at first glance. top ![]() House on a Rock Unique Custom Home Architecture and Landscaping Design : 4-Study Model The study model demonstrates how the building fits on the site. With so many roof facets, wall angles and window sizes, this model was an important tool to help understand the site and the building's mass. Very few modifications were made to the design of this house after the client could see it in 3 dimensions. top ![]() House on a Rock Unique Custom Home Architecture and Landscaping Design : 5-Front From the street below, the building commands and amazing view of the surrounding neighbourhood and countryside. The rock retains it's dominance over the street and lends itself to the multifaceted character of the house. The glazing pattern is determined by the use of the interior space, not symmetrically balanced rules of historical styled houses. top ![]() House on a Rock Unique Custom Home Architecture and Landscaping Design : 6-Side Although this is essentially a three storey building, the top two storeys are all that is visible above the rock. The observatory is the houses' prominent feature providing views of downtown Victoria, the ocean and mountains beyond. The smooth exterior texture was achieved by hand troweling the stucco finish. The expansion joints were strategically located to create a balanced grid over the entire house. top ![]() House on a Rock Unique Custom Home Architecture and Landscaping Design : 7-Rear The rear facade features large windows allowing southern light to flood into the indoor swimming pool. top ![]() House on a Rock Unique Custom Home Architecture and Landscaping Design : 8-Kitchen Finishes in the Kitchen include a flagstone floor, granite counter tops, stainless steel backsplashes and richly stained cabinets. The appliances were purchased to match the stainless steel aesthetic. Halogen pendant and under cupboard lighting create a very dramatic effect. top ![]() House on a Rock Unique Custom Home Architecture and Landscaping Design : 9-Pool The indoor swimming pool is a light filled room. The air heating/recirculating system was crafted to be an exposed feature element. It controls the environment for the pool room and entire house. top |
